“Dreams of Home” by Justin Kaminuma

Beyond the Short Official Premiere

“Dreams of Home” is an experimental coming-of-age film following a boy skateboarding through abstract landscapes and memories in search of a place he encountered in a dream. By re-contextualizing photographs and footage shot in my daily life over the years, I seek to construct dreamscapes that oscillate between the real and the surreal.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“‘Dreams of Home' was created using personal footage and photography gathered over time. In late 2021 as part of my senior thesis at Emory University, I began piecing this together, looking for what I was trying to say with all the moments I have archived. With time, this film revealed itself to me as a manifestation of my feelings of placelessness. I have always struggled to find a place that I truly connect with - whether in high school or in college. Home - to me - has always felt like a faraway unreachable ideal that I could never find. And as an Asian-American growing up in a predominantly white town, I've grappled with a sense of placelessness in relation to my own identity just as strongly. Ultimately, this film is my exploration of the confusion, anxiety, and beauty that come along with my search for home. Where do I belong? How long will it take? When will I truly feel at home?”
