“ASHES, The myth of the heron & the 62 lakes” by Charles-Antoine Thériault

Over time, nature wilfully and circumstantially adapts to its environment, but when the cyclical clash between evolution and cataclysm occurs, nature’s fight to reclaim its place often leaves scars that endure for many seasons.

“Ashes” recounts the tale of a Heron and the 62 Lakes under his watchful eye, of the creation of these watery masses that now encompass the region of Saint-Hippolyte – a tragic tale of self-sacrifice that has become an eternal legend.

The story is about Hippolyte the Heron, a great protector of nature and all living things. Hippolyte watches over the harmony between the spirits of the wind, forest, and great lake, ensuring that they live in harmony. As the seasons come and go, Hippolyte realizes that the spirits of the land no longer need his protection, so he leaves, promising to return in time.

Several springs later, a colossal fire erupts in the mountain, causing devastation across the land. The spirits of the land are defenseless against the fire, and it seems that all hope is lost. However, Hippolyte returns, persuading the Wind to his cause and commanding the elements to stand against the flames and battling the inferno relentlessly. In the end, Hippolyte sacrificed himself to extinguish the fire and created the 62 lakes that exist today as an eternal legacy.

The story highlights the eternal cycle of life and nature, where the color of the leaves adjusts to the rain, snow, and sun, and springs follow winters. It shows how nature follows its own course, and everything is interconnected. The story also illustrates how every living being has a role to play in maintaining nature's balance and how their actions impact the environment around them. In the end, Hippolyte's sacrifice creates the 62 lakes, which are a reminder of the cycle of life and nature's eternal beauty.
