“Living in a Miracle” by Dorian Tocker

Members of an unnamed suburbia prepare for an apocalyptic storm, in a lyrical vision of America in decay. Blending fact and fiction, LIVING IN A MIRACLE is an existential tone poem that finds the hidden beauty within the impending catastrophe.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Cinematographer Lauren Guiteras and I packed a rental van full of gear and spent four days roaming a decaying American suburbia, immersing ourselves in the spaces and people we photographed. We fled our bed-bug-infested motel in search of images that grabbed us by the gut: deer prancing in the wee hours of the morning, smoke- and booze-addled bikers at dive bars, children chasing each other with Nerf guns in the rain. It was indeed a "miracle.” The specific people and places we photographed represent something universal, and I'm haunted by the thought that, ultimately, everyone and everything will vanish. LIVING IN A MIRACLE emerged from this appreciation and grief, transcending despair and offering an ode to what endures in the face of our temporariness, especially as we face compounding existential threats including climate change. The film challenges us to find meaning in the tiny moments, in the glorious mundane, as we confront this increasingly apocalyptic reality. The film is a document of somewhere, anywhere in America - on the edge of an uncertain future.”
