“Only Fools Rush In” by Jack Turner

A conversation about tea drinking unravels a world conflicted by the rush of everyday life.

In 2018, I visited a small tea shop in Hong Kong where a man told me the taste of his tea tells him how he feels. An introspective and experimental short more about the little things in life than drinking tea.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“When a man told me he became aware of how he was feeling through the taste of his tea, I was inspired to create a world that was constantly moving. It needed to feel manic - like our own - as if every element of the film was attempting to pull and push the narrative in different directions. Ultimately it needed to reflect the feeling of drinking tea. For this man I met in Hong Kong, the fluidity of tea drinking became his joy, highlighting the importance of noticing the little things in life and the destructiveness of rushing.

Sound controlled the moments of calm around the poetry to allow pause, reflection and silence in the moments that mattered. In the visuals, I used cuttings of receipts and bank notes from my travels for the transitions, bringing an extra layer of texture to the Super 8mm and 2D animation. There’s some iPhone footage in there too, all adding to the crossover of visual styles that aim to echo the blur of everyday life.”
