“Cascadeurs” by Gurvann Touzé

From generation to generation, the Moore's family has been on the road: they are stuntmen, they perform every summer nights into mechanic night shows. The tradition started 200 years ago and now the 5th generation shape the 6th. But why keep going with this tradition? How do they become stuntmen? Why? How do they feel during a show? What a day in their like look? Is it dangerous? What drive them?

FROM THE DIRECTOR

"The story of Cascadeurs began in the heat of a summer's Saturday : on my way to shoot a wedding I noticed a placard beside the road. The sign announced a spectacular mechanical show with stuntmen riding monster trucks, motorbikes and cars. Can't get this show out of my head during the wedding : as a young filmmaker I have been looking for a few months for a good story to shoot my first documentary and I felt like I just found the story.

The next day I was meeting the Moore family: the guys were packed up and ready to move to the next city. I spent a couple hours with them, learning their stories and the more I ask questions, new ones kept coming in. The decision was made: if their story intrigued me so much, it should probably intrigue other people.

I started shooting with the Moore's family and meanwhile I structured my directing around links. I spent maybe 2-3 days with them, they were really open-minded to the camera. The struggle was the interviews: I think they were more intimidated by the camera rather than crossing fire with their motorbikes.

I wanted the creative direction to be short (an edit close to 10mn) and the documentary to be very rhythmic. I also wanted the viewer to explore different aspects of the Moore's life (the ups and downs) without loosing him.

For the inspiration, it was a mix between commercials and documentary I've seen, but to quote only the biggest inspo it definitely was the work of Rodeo, French filmmakers (Gabriel Dugué and Hugo Kerr).

I shot Cascadeurs as a one man band: I took the role of producer/director/DP/editor to build my portfolio and try to reach companies as well as other producers to work on project like this one. If you're taking the time to watch it, thank you: it means a lot!”
