“Once You See Red” By Ozzie Pullin

Exploring a soldier’s mental health after serving in the War in Afghanistan.

Once You See Red is a heartfelt conversation between Director Ozzie Pullin and his big brother, Jordan, who grew somewhat distant after Jordan left to serve in Afghanistan aged just 20. A decision Ozzie battled with for a long time.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Once You See Red is a heartfelt conversation between Director Ozzie Pullin and his big brother, Jordan, who grew somewhat distant after Jordan left to serve in Afghanistan aged just 20. A decision Ozzie battled with for a long time.

In an uncharacteristically direct approach over a decade later, Jordan having been home for several years, Ozzie found himself in the car with his brother asking him if he was okay, sparking a lengthy conversation the brothers had actively avoided previously, and prompting Ozzie to record the chat.

The conversation is honest and captivating as Jordan, a self confessed ‘bottle it up’ guy, opens up to his brother about his time away, recounts some haunting memories and discusses how he deals with the ‘Red Mist’, a term he uses to describe the anger and aggression he’s brought back with him from his time in Afghanistan.

Snippets from the discussion form the backbone of the film, whilst chilling footage from Jordan’s personal archive sits alongside imagery beautifully captured on 16mm by DOP and frequent collaborator Adric Watson. A delicate film with heart, Once You See Red is a labour of love between friends and family and has very much brought the brothers closer in the process.

Ozzie hopes to shine a small light on a much bigger issue in the hope that other people who are dealing with similar issues might feel more comfortable to talk.”
