“Fino” by JUAN ZULETA

Two friends construct a time machine to save a lost love.

Llane and Danny Ocean will play a pair of lifelong friends who retreat to an isolated compound with a single goal: To create the world’s first time machine so that Llane travel to the past and rescue the love of his life from a tragic fate, laboring together on this impossible task.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“If you could change your past, would you? My interest in answering that question is why I wanted this music video—set to "Fino" by chart-topping Colombian artists Llane and Danny Ocean—to put narrative front-and-center. I often tell people that I am a filmmaker who happens to work in the music video industry; not to disparage other creatives, but to express my philosophy on directing. When I do my job well, the videos I work on are not only promotional assets but also fully-realized shorts that engage with a given track. For "Fino," I was lucky enough to work with a pair of bold, risk-taking artists who shared my passion for narrative. They had looked back at their lives and wondered about the road not taken, the same way everyone does. And so together we used "Fino" to tell a sci-fi story with a heart that beat in time with their music.

I view filmmaking as an extremely physical act. After all, film was originally a tangible medium—a material, like paper—before the rise of digital. To tap into the power of film, I prefer to use as much thoughtful production design, in-camera effects, and authentic performance as possible. VFX enhancements come later, but the core of the project needs to already exist in my frame. This approach is especially helpful with a sci-fi story like "Fino" because it grounds the impossible. We were already eschewing reggaeton tropes (dancing girls, beaches, etc.) and venturing into riskier narrative territory. I wanted to help the artists orient themselves in our imaginary world, playing the role of scientists using time travel to reconnect with a lost love. Giving them real props and visible effects to play with was only half of the approach. The other half was leaning into their genuine friendship and chemistry as performers. More than just a story of rekindling romance, the video developed into a narrative about friends who will do anything for each other.

"Fino" feels set apart in the videography of Llane and Danny Ocean, which to me is a success. Music videos are a collaboration, and if I can shepherd a narrative that honors the creative vision of every artist involved—from the musicians to the designers to myself—then we will have accomplished something extraordinary. If I could change my past, would I? Not when it comes to the music video for "Fino"
