“I Can Make It Better - Jeannel” by Paulina Dana

A unique live session that invokes the "basic human desire for intimacy and love over sexual objectification and disconnection."

Recorded live against the backdrop of the intimate Margarita Xirgu theatre in Buenos Aires, the acoustic version of Jeannel's I CAN MAKE IT BETTER "is an ode to opening up, nurturing, the union of opposites," she explains. "It is an expression of basic human desire for intimacy and love over sexual objectification and disconnection."

The result is a film that combines the atmosphere and exuberance of a live studio session with the highly coordinated set design of a music video.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

With the complexity of femininity at the heart of Jeannel’s work, ‘ICMIB’ is an ode to opening up, nurturing, the union of opposites” she explains. “It is an expression of basic human desire for intimacy and love over sexual objectification and disconnection.”

Having suffered quite a bit from the Covid alienation and the pressure of the modern music industry throughout the past years, “I felt the need to create something pure and raw. I needed to circle back to my artistic roots, re-connect to my body, my most vulnerable self, move the energy and the pain that had been stuck inside so deep after two years stagnation of the pandemic.

I needed so much tenderness and self love.” Stripping the piece back to it’s very basics -piano, cello and voice- it became a meditation on vulnerability and reconnection, on authenticity and the quest for identity and wholeness. The performance was filmed in Margarita Xirgu Theater in The Casal de Catalunya, one of the oldest theatres of Buenos Aires, where Jeannel spent the winter of 2021/22 to work and escape the lasting lockdown during the crippling winter of Berlin. Coming from a background in classical music and theatre, it was a blissful coincidence to meet the director Paulina Dana, who’s family had been involved in the Theatre since its early historic beginnings and therefore had access to the emblematic space.

From The Director

“This project was a beautiful challenge. The question was how to shoot a live session as if it was a music video, always prioritizing the style and mood of Jeannel’s artistry. The cinematic composition was kept minimal, so as to pay tribute to the stripped back nature of the music.

Jeannel’s improvised dance complemented that perfectly. As for the set location, The Margarita Xirgú theatre came almost like a natural choice. I have a strong personal backstory with the place: my great-grandfather was one of the founding members of the club, and my grandparents even met there.

I knew the theatre would work in terms of the aesthetics we were after but, most importantly, it feels a bit like home to me, and that’s exactly what we needed to create the intimacy the song calls for. The video looks to immerse the viewer in a calm and hypnotizing trance. Complemented by the use of delicate photography and Jeannel’s spontaneous dancing, the viewer becomes an invisible spectator.”
