“Mark Churchill - The warning” by mark churchill
Beyond the Short Official Premiere
Trapped in a desolate virtual world, a man's quest for meaning takes a sinister turn when he discovers a presence more terrifying than his own isolation.
FROM THE CREATOR
“While writing my album Sinister Inhibitor, which features The Warning on it, I found myself becoming obsessed with early 80's digital technology. The Yamaha DX9, the synthesizer I was using a lot at the time, has this eerie and alienating quality to its sounds, no matter how you program it or which patch you use.
Around the same time, I kept finding and watching old compilation videos of early CGI short films and ads from that same era. I found that there was a distinct similarity in how these animations looked, and how the DX9 sounded. The animations were rigid, ice-cold, and alien, yet somehow also awe-striking and beautiful in this lonely sort of way. It reminded me of the early 3D games of my childhood, which I feel were more transporting and atmospheric than modern ones - probably because of the absence of realism in them, evoking a feeling of other-worldliness.
I tried my best to capture this essence with the video for the song. I taught myself the basics of Blender, a free 3D animation app, and filmed the live-action parts on my phone in my apartment, in front of a green screen.
The clip is about searching for something, and ultimately facing what is found; a reflection on the complexities of our inner and outer worlds.”
