“Stainless - Sam Darkoh” by Benjamin HS McGregor
Midnight sodium vapor-stained metal drives the atmosphere of the dark and grainy visuals for Sam Darkoh's song "Stainless."
FROM THE DIRECTOR
“When listening to the song it was clear the direction of the video needed to simply amplify the vibe of the soundscape created by Marvin Pamment and the loose spontaneity in what was essentially a freestyle by Sam Darkoh. Sam had mentioned a parkade as a location idea and it stuck with me as it is a common rap music video location that we've all seen before. I had this metallic motion capture idea, and it seemed like if I mixed that with the parkade - suddenly this potentially overdone location could be reinvented.
I opted for a handheld soft and distorted 2x anamorphic setup matched with a virtual version of the lens in the CGI motion-captured performances. The metal VFX was inspired by these incredible paintings by Kip Omolade as well as concept art for Aespa, but adding surface imperfections, and grungy backdrops.”
