“Quad Girl at the Water Park” by Marissa Hernandez
Beyond the Short Official Premiere
“Quad Girl at the Water Park” is an extremely personal film. It's helped me process emotions when intertwining the past with the present. Whether it's a relationship or an experience of unrequited love, I utilized and digitized home video footage and weaved it into the narrative. There's a catharsis, and I hope in sharing a piece of me has a relatable effect in the journey to healing, while crafting a sense of closure.
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
“It's weird when you finish a film and maybe it's different this time around, because the journey was a very personal one for me. My original vision evolved in a way I can't put into words, other than it's an emotion that washes over you. Opening up old wounds is dicey, learning from heartbreak can feel like an endless odyssey. As a filmmaker, I deeply wanted to share how roller skating can help and not necessarily cure, but conquer depression and the dark moments that tend to resurface. The journey is different for every roller skater out there. For me I wanted to imagine what it would be like to roller-skate in those moments when I truly needed it, while dealing with the weight of rejection and being burned by love. And trust me there were many times where I wanted to scrap the entire project, having all the doubts, insecurities, and self loathing, which is challenging to objectively look at when you're subjectively in the thick of it.Then suddenly there's this lightbulb moment, the realization and act of what I'm actually doing is creating a sense of closure. It's agonizing, complex, non linear, complicated, but freedom comes when you genuinely learn to make peace with those pieces of your life, and creatively finding a way to express it, encapsulates this entire process. Most of the production was a diy experience and beautifully shot and color corrected by Warren Xian over the course of two years, while archival footage was also digitized to emphasize heightened emotional memories throughout the character's journey.”
