“Shattered State Dive” by Victor Boccard
In matters of loss and heartbreak, the past is a graveyard of more questions than answers. In “Shattered State Dive”, a man living in a world powered by advanced technology that can bend the laws of time grieves a long-lost love. Broken because of the mystery surrounding the loss of his love, the man attempts a “virtual dive” through time to investigate the past’s ruins.
Directed by Victor Boccard, SSD combines the classic aesthetics of film noir with expansive VFX to doubly underscore the impossibility of overcoming time. “This film explores loss and the longing for closure, inviting viewers to ponder the complexities of memory and the pursuit of truth,” explained Boccard.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
“We shot in one night during a live light event, using only one roll of 16mm,” said Boccard. “All the people there didn’t know we were actually shooting a film. But the team's energy was good, and [they were] open to my improvisations.”
Themes of time loops and memory deterioration are also reflected in the film’s unique soundtrack. “For this project, the original score is made of an old synthesizer that was passed through a 70s tape machine many times in order to degrade it. The music is trapped in the tape and left to decay over time, like the memory of the protagonist.”
