Beyond the Short

The short was produced in 2018, totally independently and funded by us, the directors. At the time Tom and I were working together in an advertising agency in São Paulo, Brazil. Tom was a senior copywriter and I was in the movie production department.

Someday in April, Tom came to me with a crazy idea that that when burgers burn, they turn into ashes and he was imagining how funny it would be to satirize this in a serious but filled with humour short.

We were very much inspired by the Coen's Brothers movie "Fargo", that humor tone where you're dealing with pretty serious emotions and situations, but you still feel some funny awkwardness in every moment. Aesthetically, our main inspiration for the tripod symmetrical composition of the shots was Wes Anderson, he's characters also inspired the construction of our main character. Finnaly for color, we were inspired by William Eggleston's photographic work.

From there, we started to give visual preparation for each moment of the script. Imagining the emotions of each moment, how our composition should be, etc . So we made a precise storyboard of the scenes we needed and went ahead for location scouting, using google maps and whatever free tools we had to find these spots.

We found a cheap car for rent that would be the perfect match, and whose owner would risk going all the way to the beach driving it, cause we couldn't afford extra expenses with a tow truck. We also knew that the Ash Urn should be as important as the main character, so we gave it a head shape with a crown. We 3d modeled it and produced it, it's handmade.

Finally, having everything ready. We filmed all scenes in a weekend in July, 2018. It was filmed on a Sony a7sII cause we didn't have a budget for an Alexa or the crew it needed. We just had some special vintage Zeiss lenses and believed in the power of the script. Post production was slow paced because we also didn't have a budget for that, so it had to be done as favor from many great people in their free time. But it was worth it!
