“Fissures” by Ishan Parikh

Beyond the Short Official Premiere

The film begins in the present that finds Rachel and her landlord Marianne preparing for a dinner that will reunite them with their former roommate and tenant Sadie. Rachel is reluctant to the reunion due to feelings about Sadie having left. After Sadie arrives, Rachel overhears Marianne telling Sadie that she is considering a life beyond renting the home, and is looking to sell the house.

A tense dinner follows with Rachel and Sadie at a distance. Sadie reveals she is engaged, much to Rachel's dismay. Soon after, Rachel calls out Marianne for selling the house, putting her at odds with her. Sadie tries to reach out to Rachel to console her, but Rachel confronts her about abandoning them.  Unable to make amends, Sadie leaves. Rachel and Marianne make amends and Marianne agrees to keep the house until Rachel can get on her feet. Flashbacks reveal Marianne pushed Sadie to leave and find a life where she could fend for herself. In the present, Marianne finds a letter from Sadie thanking Marianne for all she did, and how much she meant to Sadie.

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

”At its core, “Fissures” is a story about the altering of a bond. The aim here was to to create a portrait of three different individuals, connected by their memories, that takes the audience on a journey to experience how time strengthens, calcifies, but ultimately gives new meaning to relationships.”
