“Genesis” by Moon
In a near imagined future, an unusual crisis grips Mumbai (India) after a devastating storm: new mothers have stopped lactating. With human milk in short supply, the government incentivizes lactating mothers to donate or sell exclusively to milk banks, imposing strict penalties for feeding others’ children and offering rewards for reporting violations. Urvashi, a 26-year-old fisherwoman who recently lost her husband to the storm, becomes a milk donor to support her infant daughter, Aanchal, amidst worsening climate conditions and rising poverty. Her slum neighborhood, home to fishermen, migrant workers, and vendors, reels from the storm’s economic devastation, with infants of poor families dying as only the wealthy can afford to buy human milk. Overworked at the milk bank, Urvashi struggles to care for her daughter. Eventually her daughter succumbs to illness. Meanwhile, societal desperation forces many women to conceive for survival, while Urvashi’s cousin Pakhi resists familial pressure to marry and start lactating.

“What if Mumbai faced a catastrophic climatic collapse—no local trains, vada pav vendors, or fish markets? The city would become a hollow shell, with the wealthy adapting while the vulnerable—fishermen/fisherwomen, migrant workers, street hawkers, and laborers—lose everything. The divide between the haves and have-nots would widen, and in this grim dystopia, people could be reduced to commodities for survival.”
