Beyond the Short
I love the simplicity that child protagonists bring to films. These films have a universality and an almost fable-like quality to them. I’d like to think that this film could be understood by a 5-year-old anywhere in the world. In conceiving the story, I thought a lot about how a 10 year old boy might grapple with the guilt of causing a horrible accident. And what if he had an older brother who dealt with the crisis differently? How would their relationship shift?
The boys were first-time actors. We cast early and spent a lot of time prepping weeks before shooting. We weren't going off of a script either. In rehearsals, we simply talked about each scene. The boys decided on their own much of what was said in the film. Because the boys had such a deep understanding of the story but weren’t restricted to specific lines or blocking, they were able to bring a real richness and authenticity to each scene.
The film that you'll see is the result of a very talented and committed cast and crew who believed in a very simple story. I hope that anyone who sees the film can find something that resonates with them.
