“Laurence Fishburne in Space” By BABYBABY
An homage to a man who keeps his cool even in hellish situations beyond our known universe told through a home shopping presenter’s semi-passionate sales pitch practice.
The inspiration for this film is… well, we like Event Horizon, kind of. Honestly not that much. But we LOVE the character of Captain Miller, or rather Laurence Fishburne’s portrayal of him. That constant composure and complete calm. That tall and confident posture running from (and towards) danger through a spaceship balancing on the edge of space and time. So our first thought was to actually make these mugs and stuff for ourselves as confidence boosters, which we realised was fucking nuts so we wrote it into a film instead to not seem like total weirdos.
The crew is pretty much the same dream team as on our debut short film Flex from last year, with a few additions. And just like Flex, this film would not have been possible without their exceptional talent and by being so generous with their time.
As for our lead we saw a video of Robert Holik doing a couple of very intense Chevy Chase lines from Vacation and realised we had found our passionate home shopping salesman right there. We wanted him to feel like a somewhat troubled soul but with a (through Laurence Fishburne’s Captain Miller) newly found, albeit rather fragile, confidence.
Our brilliant Director of Photography Viktor Skogqvist knows us by now and is always ready to go handheld and bonkers when we shout “MESSIER! JUST GO WITH HIM! MORE ZOOMS!”. He loves it. We’re pretty sure he kind of definitely for sure loves it.
The brief for music virtuosos Hanna Stenson and Lisa Gagerman could pretty much be boiled down to “Trent Reznor scores Wes Anderson” which we think they completely nailed. It’s the perfect combo of playful and disturbing.
Shot on 16mm with a minimal budget and a crew of eight in the employee dining area of a community centre in a Stockholm suburb so remote the pizza delivery guy got lost and we’re still eight calzones short.
