“Rayleigh Scattering” by Connor Carroll

Beyond the Short Official Premiere

On a final road trip across the country, two friends attempt to create joyful memories together as they grapple with saying goodbye.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“My work explores the grandness of the small gesture. What it means to go that extra mile for someone you care for, whether they are aware of the long walk you took or not. I wanted to tell a simple story of friendship near the end when there’s really no time to wait to say how you feel.

The story became somewhat reflective for me.

What do I tend to do in the face of a hard goodbye? How will I really face it when it’s my turn? Both characters have a little of me in them in that way. I knew I would want to say goodbye to the land, which is where the road trip came in. But I also thought of the many missed chances to tell someone I loved them or that I was proud.

It’s part of the human condition I suppose, but after you watch this, call your Mom or something and tell her you love her.
