Synopsis
Haunted by the death of her classmate, Martha returns, ten years on, to their old meeting place. But as the memories of their relationship come flooding back, she must confront the tragic mystery that put an end to it.
Directors statement
Adolescence is a time of secrets. Secrets we keep about ourselves but also secrets that are kept from us. Some of these secrets can have a life-long impact on us. Young people can often experience a traumatic event and bury it due to feelings of shame or guilt, causing long-term damage. Unresolved trauma is cyclical, if left unresolved it can rear its ugly head again and again throughout our lives. Those memories can haunt us and become distorted and entangled. Is it ever possible to know the truth of a traumatic event years after it has occurred? How can you find closure if there are no definitive answers?
To quote Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore, ‘Memories warm you up from the inside. But they also tear you apart.’ Anyone who has experienced a significant loss knows the strange feeling of having to grapple with memories of immense joy alongside memories of immense sadness, and location can play a huge part in this. I wanted to make a film that grapples with these themes of loss, memory and trauma. If truth is impossible to unearth years after an event, perhaps the only way to find closure is by telling your truth.
