“Feelings From Your Past” by Justin Kaminuma

A mixed-media short film about growing up and feeling lost.

FROM THE DIRECTORS

“It's autumn now. I started making this short film last month, originally experimenting with this process where you print each frame individually onto paper and then re-scan them to create this tactile, grainy image. I fell in love with the whole technique quickly, and this came together as a result of that.

While looking back at my past year through my footage, I saw a person who can't seem to get his shit together. I saw my stupid mistakes, fading friendships, and wasted opportunities, coupled with this increasing anxiety that I'm running out of time - with myself, what I love, and the people I love. It's like life has been screaming at me to get up, be better, and try but all I can do is imagine it.

Throughout the process of making this, I kept thinking of this advice I heard a while ago - something like "make the art you need for yourself".

I think I needed something beautiful. Like when you're walking to your car at the top of a parking garage after a long day, you look up at the sky and take in the orange and pink sunset – that kind of beautiful. The type of beautiful that reminds you for a little while, that it's still worth it to keep going. To just keep going.”
