"Moshi Moshi" by Lili Conzen and Ohle Minnigh
Beyond the Short Official Premiere
"Moshi Moshi" is about maneuvering adulthood with its freedoms and uncertainties. Nobu moved from a temple in Japan to Denmark 10 months ago. It's his first time in Europe. While leaving a voicemail for a friend back home, he addresses culture shocks, homesickness and the eternal search for what you don't have.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
"Moshi Moshi" is undoubtedly the most personal film we have ever made. We had 5 rolls of film, borrowed an old eclair, and got started. We mastered almost every step of the process as a trio. It's a special gift to work so closely with your friends and has reminded us how intimate a set can be. It was also the first time for us to work with 16mm and we even developed the black and white film ourselves.
Coming from a generation of replays and retakes, shooting analog made us more intentional. We would spend a long time searching for the frame before actually releasing the shutter. We knew we had to create compelling shots that could stand on their own as we wouldn't be able to rely on heavy edits or large camera movements.
Free from the constraints of a large production, we left room for spontaneity and inspiration on set. We would balance shots we intensively prepared with some that felt like a natural response to our environment. We went to the gas station craving a hotdog and left with a scene that now feels like it always belonged there. This way of working has left us with a lasting appreciation for care, collaboration, and the unpredictability of the creative process, and we are truly thankful for the experience.”
