“Time to Run- Tycho” by Patrick Elmore

We wanted to create a narrative driven music video about a cross country runner who breaks away from a competition and finds solitude in nature. To tell this story we juxtapose two different narratives: scenes of the competition itself, which we used slow motion and a stabilized camera to accentuate a sense of structure and overwhelming exhaustion, and scenes of the runner in the wilderness, which we took a more natural and handheld approach to filming.

Finding the right tone for this took a bit of figuring out. From the start, we wanted to make sure that it didn’t come off too dramatic or heavy handed, but also didn’t want it to be too goofy. Going into filming the scenes in nature, I wasn’t sure how the direction would play out on camera - filming someone roaming around the woods, looking at trees, can feel a bit forced and corny, but luckily our lead actor Tate, fell right into a natural, carefree tone, which felt like the right balance for the video. We also wanted The Runner to discover something after he breaks away from the race, but weren’t sure what that would be. As we were improvising with some shots in the woods, we looked deep into the forest and had an idea to have something absurd emerge or flash across the screen as if it were from The Runner’s P.O.V. Our gaffer, Charlie, volunteered to improvise some and what we captured with him informed the rest of the video/filming. Seeing him run wildly through the forest seemed like a logical discovery for The Runner to make and fit the title Time To Run.
