“Caitlin Cobb-Vialet' - Disco Ball” by Alex Bush
In the music video for singer-songwriter Caitlin Cobb-Vialet's lead single "Disco Ball", a woman stumbles upon a double of herself experiencing a romantic evening in an opulent beachfront home.
As the evening progresses, a strain grows upon the relationship and deteriorates into a melodramatic end with the woman unable to stop it.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
“Caitlin and I’s collaborations are often explorations in attachment and self-reflexivity. We share an interest in these themes as well as styles that are theatrical and confrontational. Our aim with Disco Ball was to create a piece of video art that lay all its weight on these interests, while also being appropriately effective as a full-throated pop music video.
The song is spoken through popular aesthetics that pull at Caitlin’s heartstrings. I wanted to build a similar relationship between the video and cinematic aesthetics that spark that same passion in me, and could also fully mine Caitlin’s rich screen presence. The story and style emerged quickly from there, fusing the seductive, sterile voyeurism of erotic/psychological thrillers with the luscious passion of musicals and melodramas.
I quickly found that pop music video logic was a very natural binding ingredient for these two styles. It’s so obsessed with the body as both a presented object and a tool for emotionally expressive rhythm and works best stretching in between those contradictions.
We had a rapid pre-production and shoot process, along with a tight budget, so the whole team prioritized milking each conceptual element for all it was worth. That burnt winter light that envelops Southern California became our compass, our brilliant DP Alli Gooch pushing us to make all decisions around our natural resources while our incisive designer Benny Pitt similarly used burnt orange as a way to track how passion is able to breathe (or not breathe) in this space.
A great, soaring pop song feels like the whole of a splashy film condensed into three minutes, and I love that this video aims to embody that while never looking away from what it’s doing, quite literally.”
