“Everybody’s Dead” By underscores
In this music video for underscores, the artist experiences a surreal car crash and a series of moments of existential dread, before it all goes up in flames.
In our first conversation, Devon mentioned that the song was about “the feeling of existential dread when you first wake up and you can’t get out of bed.” I wanted to capture that sense of impending doom with intrusive images, just visceral moments of anatomy, repetition, and nature that represent those fears.
I also wanted to reconcile this feeling of dread and powerlessness with the punk chorus of the song, which is a lot more in your face, and that’s where the fire came in. The orange fire should cut through the palette of blues and neutrals, giving an unpredictable and destructive presence to the last third of the video. The last shot of the fire is actually the last moment we shot, as the structure naturally collapsed— I’m really glad we got that real moment in there.
