“All There Is and Nothing More” by Matthew Palmer

Beyond the Short Official Premiere

An anxious man in his mid-to-late-twenties spends his days watching porn, getting high, and trying to determine the meaning of life. As he does so, he films and befriends a squirrel that passes by his apartment every day. Once he finally stumbles upon a thought that could give his life meaning, the man tries to put it into practice. But, given the opportunity to connect with another human being and fulfill his goals, the man buckles under the pressure and returns home to his squirrel friend. Earl the squirrel, however, is nowhere to be found, leaving the man hopeless and alone.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“A while ago (a year ago maybe?), Sam Ott, Danny Farber, and I made an experimental short film with no money and no real script. It was outlined (loosely), but Danny improvised pretty much all of the dialogue. Sam figured out framing on the fly. No lighting. I held a boom. We just wanted to make something and had no expectations that it would ever see the light of day. The film allowed us to explore (and grapple with) a question we'd all had - while surrounded by people, why do we so often feel alone? We didn't reach any conclusions, but we hope you enjoy this strange little film about loneliness, boredom, and a squirrel name Earl.”
