“Connection” by Loïc Phil

When everything goes wrong, missing a train connection can lead to powerful stories.

Connection is a film about the intensity of a love encounter. Two young people are living a challenging moment of their life, but an unexpected night of serendipity gives them a new spark. In the morning, they have to part ways at the train station. Will the young man stay or leave? Will they live their romance or not? We will never know. But the energy and passion generated by this new connection will surely change their lives.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Connection is a film about the intensity of a love encounter.

The challenge behind this project was to create something intense and abundant while shooting on 16mm film. We wanted the viewers to feel that they were watching a series of spontaneous moments. In digital filming, this would usually require shoo-ting a lot, documentary style, then edit the whole thing focusing on «happy mistakes». But with the analogic constraint, we only had a very limited amount of film to shoot.

This required a very precise and timed technical breakdown, where the camera mo-vements would give a sense of urge. Another key element was the actors’ commit-ment: they needed to go from 0 % to 100 % in a few seconds. Overall, these elements enabled us to relate this crazy night in less than 3 minutes.”
