“(DIS)Connected” by Karl Stelter

2071 -- A standardized implant allows users to filter their reality, replacing unwanted memories with new ones, and modifying a users life-experience in real-time to match.

When a network glitch causes Mina to experience conflicting memories, she begs a hacker (Cole), to remove the implant from her neck. At first, Cole refuses to help -claiming that she failed the initial diagnostic test. But their conversation soon reveals there is a personal tie and buried resentment between these two. Mina shares that for years she’d used the implant to rewrite the memory of her daughter’s death, and must now prove to Cole that she can come to terms with her grief.

Cole ultimately decides to help her, but when the implant's security protocol kicks in, the software overwhelms Mina’s senses and presents itself as her dead six-year-old daughter - asking her to allow her to stay…

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Each night when I put my 1 year old daughter to sleep, I try to hold onto what that feels like. The feel of the rug against my feet. Her hands layered over my left shoulder. Her head resting on my chest. Her breath. I can remember it all so vividly. But what if those memories were false - would they be any less real to me? This film comes from a very personal moment in my life when my wife and I experienced a miscarriage - where I couldn’t help but ask: if I could filter that moment, if our daughter could be six right now, would I say yes to that life? And at what cost?”
