“Les Trois Tomates” by Martin Miron

This is a film about life in harmony. About a man who found his Luck in making wine. Without distraction and the speed from the modern world. His biggest goal is to stay down to earth.

The short film Les Trois Tomates stages the feeling of happiness through "creating, sharing and enjoying" in connection with the idleness and decelerated life of winemaker Günter Hutter.

On his vineyard Domaine St. Eugene in southern France, the dropout has been living a happy, fulfilled life for many years - completely to his taste and always in the here and now. When composing his wines, this lifestyle served as an inspiration for the wine’s present name: Les Trois Tomates. It was during a culinary night, when three tomatoes served as paper weights for the notes on the creation of his first wine.

It was particularly important to the director Martin Miron to interpret the life of the emigrant in harmony with nature cinematically. Far from the modern world, work becomes a hobby - or better - a way of life. And where dedication and love is the drive for creating something to share and enjoy with those close to you.

The team from TWIST Film Productions in Düsseldorf aimed to create the portrait in an analog look with a vintage character right from the start. They relied on Available Light and the use of handheld shots to adequately capture Günther Hutter's contemplative life.

To ensure that the film does not appear old-fashioned, DOP Fabian Bien chose unusual perspectives and thus gave the film an uniquely distinctive style. This is underlined by the use of anamorphic XELMUS APOLLO lenses from Ukraine in combination with a Canon C500 MKII. Shot and played out in 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

In addition to the visual details, the acoustics also play an essential role. Therefore, all sounds of the environment were recorded separately by Mark Luberichs to transport the place and its romanticism as immersive and real as possible.

In post-production, the main emphasis in color grading was on warm tones in combination with a healthy grain. Finally, the sound design was harmonized by Justus Großkreutz.

Accompanying the film, photographer Lukas Gardemann caught special moments of bliss with a Leica M240. Made for eternity, atmospheric images capture the feeling of freedom and the thereby achieved satisfaction in the life of Günther Hutter.

At the premiere of the short film Les Trois Tomates at a wine festival in Römerberg, Germany, protagonist Günther Hutter was moved to tears; a wonderful experience for the entire team - in the spirit of the film: to create, to share and to enjoy.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“What I love about this project is the fact that you go to such a place with a rough idea and every day brought new circumstances and the concept has sharpened from day to day. The story practically wrote itself while we were shooting. For me, these are magical moments.”
