“NIGHT TRAIN was made in the spirit of 90s teen horror shows and movies like Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark? The production leaned into in-camera effects, practical makeup, and the eerie atmosphere of the NYC subway at night. My guiding principle from the start was to make a teen horror film that actually scares. Back in 1996, my mom brought home a VHS copy of the Goosebumps movie The Haunted Mask. It’s about a young girl who buys a creepy mask and wears it on Halloween night to get back at her bullies. But when the night is over and her fun has been had, she discovers that she can’t take off the mask. After watching the movie once, I hid the video away in the TV cabinet like it was a cursed object. Pieces of this early memory of the horror genre are scattered throughout NIGHT TRAIN.”
