Beyond the Short

This short was made with my wife and I while on lock-down. We wanted to do something creative but also simple - our vision was to create a short that gives you a good jolt within as short of time as possible.

For production we used pretty much the only things we already had in the apartment and a borrowed Black Magic Pocket Cam. We live on the 5th floor so we couldn't put any lighting outside the window - to solve this issue I taped a blue sheet behind the blinds to diffuse the sunlight and give it a "moonlight" look. The colorist, Aleks Ver was able to dial that in to the exact right levels and color.

The effects were relatively straightforward - Just a lot of locked off tripod shots and composites. We opted for a simple, practical approach for the monster, that doesn't reveal much. The idea was to leave it up to the viewers imagination as to what exactly is under the sheet. The sound and music by Zak DeVries and David Molina really help amp the tension up a lot from there.
