Beyond the Short

In late February 2020, AJ Apone was testing out his new 3D Printer in one of Hollywood’s oldest special effect warehouses. His first successful print was the Loki mask from Jim Carrey’s ‘The Mask’ (1994). A few weeks later, the worldwide pandemic swept across North America and AJ was forced to shut down his small business.

As Covid-19 cases skyrocketed, first responders were faced with a new crisis: a shortage of face masks. Remembering the Loki mask, AJ began printing reusable face masks with HEPA certified filters using his 3D printers. With the help of family and the local community, The Mask Initiative was born, quickly expanding to 20 printers and donating 4000 masks to first responders.

Filmed during the lockdown in North Hollywood & Santa Clarita, California.
