“Grave Pleasures - High on Annihilation” by David Fitt

This is the end of the world, but we will go out with a smile on our face.

The third installment from the "Eva" saga directed by French filmmaker David Fitt for the Finnish goth band Grave Pleasures. This one aims to capture the End of the World zeitgeist and relieve anxiety through weird and humor. Our world might come to an end soon, but let's laugh about it until the very end!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

"High on Annihilation" is the third instalment in a trilogy of music videos I've directed for the Finnish post-punk band Grave Pleasures, after "Joy through Death" and "Heart like a Slaughterhouse". Based around that one protagonist, gracefully portrayed by Eva Dereta, each of these chapters can be watched independently but form a coherent whole about a young girl dealing with life & death.

In the "High on Annihilation" video, she faces the End of the World, but with a smile: if we're gonna go, let's have fun one last time! We really wanted to push the limits on this one, going as awkward as possible. Having felt the anxiety of death and nuclear threats really intensely this last year, as many probably have too, I wanted to turn around this negativity, and turn it to ridiculous, funny, and beautiful.

On a more technical level, this was also the opportunity to play around with some AI, as all backgrounds used in the video were generated with Midjourney. We didn't have the proper budget to hire a proper painter unfortunately. But it was quite fun and impressive to generate so many pictures, seeing the aesthetic develop in real-time: getting inspired by AI, which was inspired by us, while we were inspired by AI, etc.

The video ends with the coronation of our main character because she deserves it as a great actress, and also because we all deserve a new friend to enter the afterlife.”
