“Further” By Positioning

Official music video for the song "Further" by positioning. Shot on 16mm, the film explores that fleeting sense of growing older, wiser yet finding yourself forever tethered to your past. It's the bittersweet realization that you've come a long way.

The band positioning reached out to me about a music video for their song “Further” to promote 1A, their new EP. They made the EP over the course of the pandemic, working with Angel Marcloid on the mixing and mastering. “Further” came from a bittersweet place, with memories of driving to Fort Walton Beach as a child, knowing you’ve grown into a new person, time and experience transforming you. Life may be different, but it’s gotten better. I sensed a lot of nostalgia in the song, a kind of wistful melancholy, so I built the tone and the visuals around this feeling. After some discussion, brainstorming and lemon water, I presented the idea of the video and suggested we shoot it on 16mm.

My partner Danielle Adelman and I had gotten married and moved to Los Angeles during the pandemic. With her as producer, we scouted locations around LA and learned the lay of the land in our new city. I was lucky enough to meet cinematographer Dan Muchnik through a mutual friend. Dan’s work is incredible, and we were fortunate to have him join the team. Dan brought Alex and Lared on to round out the crew, and I asked my friend Sophia Yu to star in the film. Sophia is an old friend of mine who produced some of my short films back in Austin, so it was exciting to be back on set with her. I was also lucky enough to work with my talented Austin friend Charlie Goulet, who did our visual effects. The video brings all these contributions together, hitting just the right tone for the song: doleful, bittersweet, hopeful and horrific.
